Conjecture:

William is descended from Cuthbertsons who moved from the lowlands of Scotland to Londonderry by 1630. That branch of the family prospered and by 1690, the family of John Cuthbertson had relocated to County Tyrone. William and Rachel left Ireland for Wilmington, Deleware in Jan. 1772 with, and eventually ended up in Paddy's Creek, NC. William's brother John also married a Monteith - Janet Monteith
