BACK TO HOME PAGE <index.html> Anthony & Frances Street Family Find See new up-date at bottom of article- May 16, 2004 ANTHONY STREET OF WINCHESTER, TN Researcher Rita Grigsby found some cemetery information which may be of interest to the families related to Anthony Street of Winchester, TN. Rita has been photographing and listing grave stone information at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Newport, Jackson, County Arkansas when she found some Street family markers. She is not related to the Street family, but wanted to pass these photos and information on to us. She found the grave of Lelia Grace Street daughter of Anthony Street born 1820. On the back side of Lelia's grave marker she found the inscription below.
STREET, SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF ANTHONY STREET WHOSE BODY RESTS ELSEWHERE, BORN IN WINCHESTER, TN., MARCH 8, 1820, DIED JUNE 1874. IN SURE AND CERTAIN HOPE OF THE RESURRECTION UNTO ETERNAL LIFE.
This Street family moved from Winchester, TN to Memphis, TN where Lelia was born. Anthony was the son of William Henry Street ( b. 1771 in Hanover Co., VA) and Elizabeth Herndon Street. Researcher Edward Murphy found that William and Elizabeth were buried in Memphis, TN. Elizabeth Herndon came from an old Virginia line that connects the Catherine Digges, daughter of Edward Digges, Colonial Governor of Virginia 1656-1658. Mr. Edward's research indicates Anthony was a successful industrialist and Confederate supporter in Memphis at the time of the Civil War and was forced to leave when the Union forces took the city. He eventually settled in Batesville, Arkansas until his death in 1874. He believes Anthony was buried in Batesville, however his grave has not been located.. His wife Elizabeth (Fannie) survived him by 15 years and lived with her daughter Lelia's family in Newport. Anthony's line appears to be the following: William Henry Street > >Anthony Street (b. 1727 in Henrice Co., VA and died 1825 in Winchester, TN > > William Street & Jane Bayes > >William Street (b. about 1680 and died 1752 in Caroline Co.) & Jane Waddy.

Here is some additional information on Anthony Street's life in Memphis, TN. In the 1849 city directory of Memphis, Anthony was of the firm of Street, Dougherty & Co., dealers in staple and fancy dry goods at No. 38, Front Row. The named principals in the company were W.H. Street (his older brother, JC. Dougherty and Anthony Street. By 1855 he had become a (railroad) car manufacturer at 55 Poplar Street in Memphis. The 1856-57 directory listed his car factory and machine shop at 55 Poplar Street and his residence on Second Street.
In 1859, A. Street & Co. was in the business of car makers, iron founders, and machinists at the Navy Yard. Anthony Street and Fayette Hungerford (Street & Hungerford) were manufacturing railroad cars, wagons, carts, plows, wagon spokes, hubs, iron and brass castings, gin gearing, etc.
Anthony Street was listed in Memphis in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. By 1860, Anthony and his wife Frances had five children listed (at least 2 others had died in early childhood.) He reported to the 1860 census enumerator that he owned real estate worth $160,000 and personal property worth $100,000. It would all be lost as the results of the Civil War a few years later.
Anthony Street refused to sign a loyalty statement to the Union after the war and thus could not recover any of his prior assets. He died away from home on an out of state trip trying to get some kind of business started. It was too far away to bring his body home, so he was buried there (site unknown). This is why his family placed the "in absentia" stone in the Newport Cemetery. - - -Thanks to Ed Murphy for this up-date.
